PromiseOpportunities is a website (“Website”) that seeks to connect doctoral students, post-doctoral scholars, and pre-tenure faculty (“Candidates”) from under-represented backgrounds with professional development and networking opportunities (“Opportunities”) within the University of Maryland System (“USM”). This free resource is available to USM employees (“Academic Administrators) and Candidates from any university in the USM. Funding for this project provided by the National Science Foundation Project #1820971. Opinions, findings, and conclusions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect the position or policy of the National Science Foundation, and no official endorsement should be inferred.

The Website makes no guarantees of success to Candidates or Academic Administrators.

Communication

The Website will email Candidates and Academic Advisors initially to verify their email account and then at key intervals as a reminder to update information on the Website.

Data

The Website is committed to the responsible use of personal and sensitive information. The Website stores information provided by users for the sole purpose of populating the Website. Data is stored in a secure database and is only accessible to registered users, site administration, and the Principal Investigators of the grant (“Verified Users”). By creating a profile on the Website, users acknowledge that data will be shared with Verified Users.

Use

The Website team has protocols to address suspicious activity such as inappropriate content, misinformation, or spam to protect users and ensure the integrity of our community. The Website encourages all users to review their profile and Opportunity posts to ensure they do not contain offensive or inappropriate content, inaccuracies, or inauthentic claims. Suspicious activity should be reported to site administration at rcresisk@umbc.edu. When a report is received, site administrators will immediately contact the suspected offender to notify them that a claim has been made, and that their profile and related content is under review. Site administrators will investigate all reports and take the appropriate action, which in some instances may result in the disabling or even permanent removal of the profile and/or opportunity.

Candidates are limited to searching and viewing opportunities within the Website and will not have access to other Candidate information. Academic Administrators can search and view both Candidates and Opportunities and are able to view, download, and print reports with details of all Candidates and Opportunities within the platform.

Candidates and Academic Advisors are responsible for updating information on the platform. At minimum, Candidates should keep all personal information current including status and contact information and Academic Advisors should keep contact information current and opportunity details, including start and end dates.
